    • I did think her paper was good, but it wasn’t really reltead to the theme of iconophobia , as you say. It probably worked best as an introduction to Burne-Jones’ treatment of the Sleeping Beauty story, maybe as a lecture for undergraduate Art History students? So, yes, I agree with Colin. I’ve looked at my notes repeatedly and can find no tie in to the iconophobia theme at all. I do wonder if a discussion of Medusa in EBJ’s Perseus cycle might have been more relevant the fear of looking directly at Medusa, and then the role of mirrors/reflective surfaces as a conduit/protection?Re: the comparison of the paintings to death portraits, thinking in terms of Burne-Jones using his daughter Margaret as the model, he seriously grieved for her when she married and moved away and did speak of his dread at losing her as she started to grow up, so I wonder if it was a kind of death portrait for him, of the separation and loss he knew would come. But I need to check the paintings’ dates and the date of Margaret’s marriage for that. I saw a rather intriguing interpretation of Sleeping Beauty by Matthew Bourne (he of the all male Swan Lake), and the characters being asleep was signified by their wearing blindfolds it really changed how you looked at the characters when asleep. Their status as victims of a curse was made more evident that way, as was their imprisonment in the castle, for all that it was protective.
